I was sitting in a Starbucks and a few tables over, three guys concluded a meeting. It appeared that two of the gentleman were pitching something to a buyer or partner. I think it was some kind of medical technology. (I eaves dropped a bit) They must have heard what they wanted. After the prospective client left they looked at each other, BEAMING, and then high fived and hugged like they just won the Super Bowl. Imagine having that kind of genuine, spontaneously shared celebration type of excitement about your work!!
What if you don't have that kind of excitement and passion for what you do? We've all heard if you find a career you love, then you'll never work a day in your life. Less bumper sticker like - pursue your passions. Mike Rowe - of 'Dirty Jobs' fame - has explicitly advised AGAINST pursuing your passions. If you follow Jim Collin's Hedge hog Concept he advises only following your passion if you're really good at it and you can make a living doing it. So, if you're doing something for work - even if it's extremely fulfilling and/or financially rewarding - that doesn't ignite your passion what does that mean for you? Does that mean you just miss out on that experince in your life?
Let's revisit our two friends from the Starbucks story. Think of that excitement. Now, think of having that kind of excitement and passion for anything in your life. It doesn't have to be your work. You could easily argue it shouldn't be anything involving your career at all. It could be your family, a hobby, an athletic pursuit. It could be your friendships, a church group or a volunteer organization. It could simply be rooting for your favorite team and being passionately imbedded in the full fan experience.
Your life will be better, happier and fuller if you find something the lights you up. Try new things, explore new opportunities and experiences. Push the limits of your comfort. Find the community of like-minded and like passionate people. Find something that excites you. Give yourself permission to be happy. Give yourself permission to give into childlike excitement for something!! It will make you healthier. It will make you happier. It will make you better.
